I was wondering if I bought DLC off the main gratuitous website if it would work with my original purchase of the core game off of steam. Would this be compatible or am I cursed to only buy DLC off of steam?
You can definitely mix our DLC with the steam core game. The only thing you need to do is absolutely ensure that you browse to the correct folder so that the DLC installs in the right place* when you run the installer. Do not attempt to copy files after installing it wrong, make sure you get the right location.
Probably in \program files\steamapps, but that may vary
