downloading ships from workshop

No change with 1.30. Were those log files any help?

It sounds more like a steam workshop issue. In steam\logs\workshop_log.txt there should be stuff like this:

[2015-05-18 16:21:55] Detected workshop change for AppID 344840 : added subscribed item 432721958
[2015-05-18 16:21:55] Detected workshop change for AppID 344840 : changed cached item 432721958
[2015-05-18 16:21:55] Starting Workshop download job for AppID 344840
[2015-05-18 16:21:55] Workshop update job started while app 344840 is running, commit : yes
[2015-05-18 16:21:55] Finished Workshop download job for AppID 344840 (No Error)

If none of that is in there, it almost sounds like steam workshop has somehow been disabled entirely for you, or for this app in particular.
When you subscribe to a mod from within steam, it should immediately kick off a content download. if that doesn’t happen, then the game isn’t going to be able to do anything.

Ok, I decided to install the Steam version of the game to see if that works, and when I installed it, it immediately downloaded the mods. So, the problem lies with the non-Steam version. Also, even though it downloaded the mods, they still don’t show up in the game (I checked both the Steam and the non-Steam version.). I found the mods under Steam/SteamApps/workshop/content. I tried manually copying the ship.txt file from there to the My Documents/My Games/GratuitousSpaceBattles2/ships folder, and then it did show up in both the Steam and the non-Steam version. So, two different problems.

Now that it did download, I have that data from the workshop_log.txt for you:

Hold on… If I understand correctly you are subscribing to mods in steam, closing steam and then running the version without steam? That will not work, as steam needs to be running to download the mod content, because it needs to authorize and recognize the app. If you have steam, and subscribe to steam mods, you are definitely best off launching the game through steam.

No no… I have the version downloaded from BMT Micro, which I call the non-Steam version. I have always understood that Steam must be running in order for it to download Steam mods. You have stated several times that Steam mods work with the non-Steam version, so I’ve been running this version from BMT Micro, while Steam is running, and it tries to download, but the downloading message just sits there forever until I hit Esc. That’s problem #1 which we’ve been discussing all along and I would like to get this working.

Problem #2 was that when I tried installing the game through the Steam client, it downloaded the mods, but the Steam version of the game couldn’t find them.

Aha ok good.
Basically steam downloads content and puts it here: (example)

C:\steam\steamapps\workshop\content\344840\432721958

In that folder you will find all the content that is in a mod that steam workshop grabbed. The game should then automatically (once steam says its doiwnloaded) copy it to…

C:\Users\cliffski\Documents\My Games\GratuitousSpaceBattles2\mods\borg cube(dreadnaught)

(obviously the exact number and names above will differ…).
At that point, the mod is installed, the game will see it, and it will have an entry in the mod control panel.
What I’m unsure of in your case is exactly at what point this is going wrong.

If you could check tom see if the files are in that steam folder, that means I can rule out steam being at fault. if they aren’t there, then steam isn’t doing its bit. if they are there l,k but they haven’t been copied to the my docs subfolder, its the game.

That spinning dialog box basically sits there while steam downloads stuff, while it does the copying, and while it then also reloads all the modules/ships data to take into account new mods. That should take <10 seconds.

Related to Problem #2:
The mods did download to the Steam\steamapps\content\XXXXXX folder with the Steam version. They did not copy to My Documents\My Name\My Games\GratuitousSpaceBattles2\mods folder. That’s the part in my earlier post where I was saying it worked when I copied the file over manually.

Related to Problem #1:
No idea how to get the non-Steam (BMT Micro) version to download anything.
