Game crashing while changing music volume and on new game

Hello,

I just bought the game, but I have not been able to play it yet. The game keeps crashing to desktop 1) when I try to use the Music Volume slider in the Game Options menu, and 2) when I start a new game (New Game > Play > Play).

In both cases this is the content of errors.txt (the time of the errors changes, but the error itself is always the same):

02/10/2020 - 16:xx - ERROR: VectorEngine::CalculateSvgDimensions: : can not load file.

This is the content of debug.txt:

Hi, I’m looking into this now…

I just tested the current build here and it seems ok, will try on another PC. Is this windows 10 64 bit? Is the sound card driver definitely up to date? Does the game play music and make UI sounds at the main menu?

Thank you. I use Windows 10 64-bit indeed. Sounds seems to be working fine; I hear the music and UI sounds in de the main menu.

To be sure I just updated my sound card drivers. The game keeps crashing unfortunatly.

I’ve just uploaded a new version of the game. its EXACTLY the same, but gives me more debug information on that error:

Failed to find neuron:D:\programming\democracy 4\builds\Democracy4\src_all_operating_systems\sim\SIM_Neuron.cpp 468

Which is very suspicious. Any chance you could give that a try?

Of course. I’ll let you know in a minute.

Tested the new version (D4Installer1151) and started a new game. This is the result:

Ok… I have a theory, working on another version… I might just linke a new .exe

Thank you. Let me know if I can do anything.

I think I have a temporary fix. It will sounds nuts.
Go into the ‘region’ settings for your PC. change the decimal operator from a comma to a period. That will fix it for now. proper fix incoming…

If you can’t find the settings I hope this picture with the steps helps.

  1. Go to Control Panel and choose Clock and Region and select Change date, time or number formats
  2. Go to Additional settings…
  3. Change the decimal point from a comma (,) to a dot (.) using the dropdown menu

Thank you. This did the trick

Now I wonder if disappearing zeros on the front (saving game or debug logs) are related to regional formats too…
Time seems to be treated like normal number.
At least game writes time like it were numbers separated with “:”

One of my saves were affected by this funny bug:
<date>25/9/2020 (DD-MM-YYYY) - 16:2</date>
Debug log also doesn’t write down zeroes in front.
[20:51:9:996]
[20:51:10:16] (last number should be after dot as its miliseconds…)

That bug is listed in trello, but my bet its essentially time not treated as time when written in file.

I’ve uploaded build 1.116 and this should fix this issue

It works fine now. Thanks for solving the problem.

A small but grating thing: Posting this here because it’s to do with changing sound volume.

In D3, when I was changing the computer’s sound volume in-game the windows OSD (I think it’s called) would pop-up in the screen’s top-left and show me that the computer volume was moving from 20 to 30 or whatever. It would then disappear after a few seconds.

In D4, the OSD thing is not popping up when I change the computer volume in-game now. I think this is because, the first time I played the game, an unexpected dialogue box appeared and I accidentally changed some setting by being too trigger-happy with my mouse clicker. Now I can’t find the setting to reverse that change.

Can you help me retrieve the volume display temporary pop-up thing?! Thanks in advance.

It seems like its windows thing - no such thing is displayed when I change volume.

Did you install some software that displays volume popup in games when changing volume?
You could check OSD settings or whatever software you were using.

Yes indeed, we never did that, so it sounds like a sound driver does it. Maybe the sound system we use now is not triggering the driver in the same way?

Thanks for replies. Yeah, it must be something to do with a windows 10 / sound driver setting. (I’ve not installed any other software recently.) I can’t find the setting that can sort this, but no big deal.
