[Mod] Less Is More

This is a mod that deletes functions that were unbalancing or gratuitous. It is intended to be used as a foundation for more modding, with new functions.

  • Armed Police does not reduce Violent Crime. As argued in the policy description. (The policy is already strong enough.)
  • Capital Gains Tax, Corporation Tax and State Housing no longer increases number of Socialists. Gratuitous and unbalancing.
  • Space Program does not make people less religious. (Take a look at the USA and Russia.)
  • Immigration has no effect on GDP; gratuitous, probably supposed to be reversed.
  • Rail Subsidies no longer upset Motorists; they should get happy about fewer cars on the road.
  • Organic Farming Subsidies no longer improves Health. As in real life, most organic products are identical to conventional products. Might add an environmental bonus.
  • Science Funding does not improve GDP or decrease Unemployment; scientists can get good jobs even if not hired by the government. Already a good policy.
  • Technology no longer improves Education; breaks a positive feedback loop which made development too easy.
  • Technology no longer increases the number of Retired people; Health already does that.
  • High Wages no longer increase Productivity; gratuitous.
  • Work Safety no longer increases Union membership; rational workers would react to poor safety by start supporting the unions. When safety improves, unions are less needed.

Please provide feedback.

Devils advocate for some points:

  • Armed Police. Debatable, and I take your point, but I think the effect is worth keeping. If you have very high levels of violent crime (and particularly if gun laws are loose) the police may need to be armed to stop them being routinely outgunned by criminals.

  • State Housing should up socialist numbers; people living in them are getting clear concrete examples of what an interventionary state can do for them.

  • Immigration - being an attractive country to immigrate to will bring in highly skilled labour from abroad in addition to the unskilled.

  • Rail subsidies. Their happiness due to fewer cars on the road is already modelled by the fact that Traffic Congestion will drop. Their unhappiness is because their taxes are being used to fund something they don’t use. Valid link.

  • Science funding. Keeping your country on the cutting edge is vital to economic growth. GDP link reflects this. In terms of unemployment, it’s a twofold effect. Firstly, highly skilled scientists will always be able to find jobs - but if a neighbouring country is spending billions on research programmes, then they may well go and work there instead of in your country. Secondly, funding innovation helps to develop new industries, with all the commensurate ancillary jobs. Suppose (to give a fairly recent example) you fund research which helps develop graphene in a university. Sure, you’ve only directly employed a few scientists - but when companies are set up to work with graphene, they need cleaners, accountants, they might need a new plant built, etc, etc.

  • Technology/Education. Counteracted by the fact that if you invest in Technology without Education, you’ll quickly get a Skills Shortage.
