If you’d like a somewhat more contemporary example, the penultimate scene from Saving Private Ryan features armor non-penetration. You can see the bit I’m talking about on YouTube here (it is a spoiler if you haven’t seen the movie).
Sigh.
There are periods in History where some common weapon was useless against contemporary armour; Iron Headed Bows vs Steel Plate Mail; solid shot cannon vs Ironclads; RPGs vs Composite Armour. There’s no plea to “realism” (which is the point I’m answering) which could categorically exclude “Imperial Lasers vs Metaphasic Shields” (or whichever) from that list.
