Spent a couple of hours playing last night, but when I tried to get back on this morning it would not open. It runs as a background application according to “task manager”, but never opens a window or takes over the screen. I saw a previous post on this forum suggesting to run as admin, but I am not sure how to do that. Would uninstall/re install help?
I run the game through Steam and have had it for a couple of years. Last night was the first time that I’ve cracked it open in a little bit(been playing Hawken) There is no error message, after telling the game to run the game ask me about my cd key (which all Steam games do) then I get the hour glass for about 3 seconds, and then…nothing. That’s it, that is all I get.
So, an update; Talked to my roommate, he said that he had been playing this morning before I got up and that it had just crashed. He could not remember what the error message was. Uninstall/re install did not work. When I double click the game it does run, steam tracks the hours played on various games and that number does go up after I try to start the game; it only stops counting when I use task manager to stop the game. Still, it never comes up on my screen, no audio is heard and there are no indications that it is running (outside of task manager).
I would appreciate any help.

Side note: did anyone change the resolution ?
head to \My Documents\My Games\GratuitousSpaceBattles\prefs.ini and have a look at the file
Copy paste this code into it and see if that helps

Changing the screen resolution did not help, it still runs as a background process and I can’t play.
A few ideas, nothing concrete yet:

has the firewall settings changed ?
from the look of it, the game is trying to connect to the internet.

Try getting steam to reverify the files (i know you have downloaded it but you never know)

one last option is to head across to \My Documents\My Games\GratuitousSpaceBattles and rename the \GratuitousSpaceBattles directory to something like \GratuitousSpaceBattlesold
then run the game again, it will force it to rebuild the directory
Those first two did not help, that third one worked like a charm.

Not a problem 
Now, the trick now is to migrate the data from the GSBold directory back to the new one. ie ship designs, module unlocks etc.
