Steam required

Hello,

Is Steam going to be required for the final version?
The Buy Now page mentions a free Steam Key on release but it doesnt mention if this is going to be required or if it is an added bonus.

I wouldnt mind Steam for my desktop but I dont want the extra Steam bloat for my laptop when I travel.

Awesome.
Just picked it up last night.

I kind of got tired of the Tower Defense type of games (there are tons of them on the ipad) but this has just enough originality to make it worthwhile.
