At the moment the target painter for fighters is not worth using as it means one less wepond on all ships, when you only want to have it on one. This means that you could set the squad leader to have the targate desegnator so the missile fighters get thr benifit from having one without having to give up a wepond.
very true, although I suspect the true solution here might be various sizes of fighter squadron. It would be cool to be able to buy a squadron of just 4 fighters to do minimal escort duties for a frigate (for example).

4, 9 and 16 would seem like sensible sizes, as that’s 2x2, 3x3 and 4x4 respectively.
Being able to add them in 4s would also let people mod in corvettes (say, twice or three times the size of a current fighter) and not have to pay for tons of them at once.
I really like the idea of customizable fighters. I like the utility of the fighters, but it just doesn’t make sense for me to have so many devoted to a single task…
