[SUPPORT][WIN] Game crashes before startup

Hello. I cannot get the game to start up at all. Have tried running it through Steam and independently and get the same message: Oops! The game crashed. The crash report folder named “2016-07-12-224144” next to game executable. It would be great it you’d send it to the developer of the game!

Running on Windows 10 and here are the logs. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi Rob. First off, I’m really sorry about the late reply to your post. I’ve been on holiday for the last week.

I’m also really sorry you’re having problems getting the game to work. Let me see if I can help.

First things first, have you tried following the steps listed here: viewtopic.php?f=50&t=14319 ?

It seems like this might be a permissions issue due to the following line:

0 MB physical memory [0 MB free]. 0 MB paging file [0 MB free]. 0 MB user address space [3799 MB free]. Read from location 00000044 caused an access violation.

So the very first thing I would try is running the game in Administrator mode. Let me know how you get on.

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes I tried the administrator and the compatibility mode and it didn’t work but I think I may have found the issue. My laptop was hooked up to my TV as a dual screen and once I changed the display settings to just the TV it worked fine.

I am however now having issues with the game becoming quite unresponsive (I have to click multiple times or hold the click before it selects) and then eventually crashes. Do you know what might be causing this?

Sorry for the delay. No I’m only a couple of levels into the game and not really building a lot of complex things. I checked other areas of the forum and it sounded like an existing issue which was being fixed but I checked the game version and it’s the updated version.

CPU is Windows 10, 2.4 Ghz and 8GB RAM. It doesn’t have any problems running more demanding games like Skyrim other games from Steam.

I’ve reread your last post and I now think that I may have been concentrating on the wrong bit. The fact that the game eventually crashes suggests to me that maybe something more is happening than a mere performance issue.

Can you find another crash report, like the one you posted for the original issue? If so, could you post it? It might give me some clue as to what is happening.

Unfortunately it doesn’t look like this one is creating any kind of crash report and when it does crash I don’t get any message telling me it crashed like it did with the original issue. Sorry that’s not much use to you but I think I have seen that the issue has been raised previously. It sounds a lot like the one being described here: viewtopic.php?f=50&t=11288. Hopefully that might point you in the right direction of what is happening?

Hi Rob, ah yes I remember the post your referring to. Basically, there was a memory leak, there were certain objects that were getting recreated over and over and only being cleaned out when you restarted the game. However I believe I have fixed the issue.

The key test is does it get faster again when you save the game and load it up. If not, then it’s more likely to be a straight performance issue. Could you do this test and let me know.

Also, is the game more responsive when paused?

It seems to be as soon as the game autosaves that it then slows down. I tried saving and loading but as soon as I tried to load it crashed (without a crash report though). Pausing it doesn’t change anything, it looks like it’s something to do with the save.

OK, well if it’s having issues with save/load then that is suggesting problems with I/O (input/output - talking to the hard disc). Are you running Antivirus software? Sometimes AV software can be pretty harsh when it comes to checking anything that a program reads from/writes to the hard disc. You could try disabling it to see if it improves?

Now more generally speaking, we are talking about pretty fundamental issues here e.g. crashing when loading the game. Even if there was an access violation (game didn’t have sufficient permission to access your save game area) the game shouldn’t crash. It will put up an error message saying “Error: could not save game to…xyz”.

This suggests to me that there are some fundamental issues going on with your system that are causes instability. Would you mind following this troubleshooting guide that Steam provides to see if anything helps?

Yeah I have AVG on my system. I turned it off but unfortunately the same issue; as soon as it auto-saves the performance issues kick in. Just turned the auto-save off though and it’s working absolutely fine. It solves things from my point of view but guess it doesn’t help you find the issue.

I looked through the Steam guide but all my drivers are up to date and my other games work OK. If you want me to try anything else to pinpoint the issue lt me know but I’m quite happy to just keep the auto-save off.

Whoa, that is very, very strange. I must admit, that does sounds like something at my end. I will take a look through the autosave code and make sure it’s not doing anything weird. Maybe there is some weird thing going on like if the autosave doesn’t complete, it keeps trying again and again.

Oh OK, well that has thrown me again. For me to get to the bottom of this I’m going to need a very detailed description of exactly what causes what. Here’s my understanding so far, please correct me where wrong and answer my additional questions.

You start a new level, play the game with no problems. You go to the menu, click save, and confirm the save dialog.

From here the game performance goes down hill? Low framerates, jittery animation, stuff starts to be unresponsive, that sort of thing? Does this happen immediately after the save or degrade gradually? Can you confirm that saving causes poor performance but does not cause a crash? Does this happen every time you save?

Then when you try to load a game at any time, the game crashes to desktop? Does this happen immediately? Does this happen every time? What about if you load from the menu? If not, please explain exactly what does happen.

OK I’ve got an idea. I’ve made a few leaps in my logic, but based on what you’ve described, it could be an issue with creating the thumbnails (little preview pictures that appear when you select a save game from the list) for the save games.

Basically, looking at my code, I’ve seen a possible issue where if there is an error while saving the thumbnail to the disc, then it will keep on trying to generate that thumbnail every frame. This would be OK if it was a temporary problem, but if it continues to fail then it will be doing lots of extra work which could result in a performance drop.

Now, I can add a little code at my end that will stop this performance drop but it won’t fix the underlying issue of your thumbnails not saving.

I need you to do two things:

  1. First go to the save game folder here: C:\Users<username>\Documents\My Games\Big Pharma\Saves . Are there any thumbnails for your save games? Or in other words: For every save file e.g. “Beginner - Bottom Line 1.sav” there should also be an image file e.g. “Beginner - Bottom Line 1.PNG”.

If there are .pngs for each save, then that means my diagnosis is incorrect. This is not the issue. If there are no .pngs, then it looks like my diagnosis is correct. Wahoo, that means we can probably fix it. Please let me know which one.

  1. Please send my your latest output.log file after saving a game. Hopefully it will contain some errors which I can try to use to pin-point this issue. It’s probably to do with the game having insufficient access rights to save in this folder. You have been running the game in administrator mode right?

For some reason I can’t attach the output files here but the one I found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Big Pharma\Big Pharma_Data\output_log.txt I’ve pasted at the bottom. I am getting the PNG files though and I’ve attached one of them here.

Well looking at the log everything seems to be working just fine. Are you still having the performance issues/crashes?

If so, how often? You seemed to be able to load the game many times and continue playing without problems? :slight_smile:

Yep actually everything seems to be working well now. I even saved without it slowing down. Could be because I’ve set it to run as administrator as default now so maybe you were right about it getting stuck trying to write somewhere it didn’t have permissions.
