Using Direct control

Hi all, I’m trying to use the direct control to stop my ships wandering (at times) randomly around the screen. I don’t seem to be able to get them to move where I want, clicking on the ship, then trying to direct it where to go is unsuccessful. I had a look in the manual and read this:

You can also hold down control to select a bunch of different ships. Clicking on
empty space will cancel the current selection.
Movement Orders
When you select a ship, any existing movement override-orders are shown by a green arrow. Clicking on empty space
will issue an override-order to all selected ships to move to that location.

As you see, it contradicts itself. So what actually happens when you click on an empty space???

I believe that you are supposed to use right-clicks for giving movement and attack orders, and left-clicks for selection and deselection.

Yep
