The space backgrounds for the various missions are already very good. How about a little animation as well? The backgrounds don’t need directly animating. An animated overlay could be applied. A good example of this is in the game R-Type Command (R-Type Tactics (UK Edition)), for PSP. That game has 2D foreground graphics and little sparkley animated asteroid fields in the background of many missions. It could be enhancing for GSB to have animated asteroid fields too. How about animated atmospheres also? But it all wants to be very slowly animated, in order to be realistic. It’s the kind of attention to detail that makes people say ‘wow’. A nebula could have some kind of animated gas clouds effect. The game ‘Freespace 2’ did this with a combination of volumetric fog and 2D images growing larger in the center of the screen, before transitioning to the next 2D image.
