I forget exactly when, but sometimes in 1.39, the diagonal wipe still occurs instead of the circular one, mostly in the ship design and scenario deployments.

Seems like build 1.39 works for you then? I turned off the patching until I find why it crashes for some people. Including me, maybe 0,1% of the time 
oh, so it IS intended. 1.39 works as intended then.
