Help me plese

help when I click on Gratuitous space battles it comes up with the backdrop for the main menu screen but it doesn’t load waited an hour but still nothing but the loading screen it doesn’t come up with any error messages either help me please someone

operating system, computer specification, method of purchase, error text file, in the GSB folder thats in “my documents”.

get this information, then we might be able to help

it has worked fine up until now so I don’t think it has any thing to do with the computer specification also as I said there has been no error messages it just won’t load. my operating system is windows 7 and I purchased it from this website

Have you made any changes to your install since the last time the game started up correctly? Especially, have you installed any mods in that time?

I did some editing to a ship of a custom race I had been creating (still trying to figure out how to put my own hulls in the game since I don’t have Photoshop :frowning: ) on the in game editor and tested it out it worked then the next day when I opened Gratuitous space battles up it wouldn’t load I checked in the files area and it had deleted the ship I had edited do you think this could be what’s causing it (I have since then deleted the race and all ships hulls and modules associated with it but the game still doesn’t work)

Okay, we may need a little more information. Navigate to My Documents/My Games/GratuitousSpaceBattles/debug. There should be a file there named errors.txt that may tell us what the game is having a problem with. Each line in the file should begin with a date, so if you can post the most recent lines here we may be able to get to the bottom of the problem.

ok here they are

17/1/2014 - 15::28 - CreateDevice failed again
17/1/2014 - 15::28 - Failed to initialise 3D Engine:…\src\Game.cpp 343

From looking at this, it seems apparent that the D3DERR_DEVICELOST error is our problem. Unfortunately, I do not know what would cause it (as I have not seen that error before).

So I’m going to fall back on an old tech support staple: Try reinstalling the game and see if that helps. If not, we can then move on to the next thing.

okay I’ve uninstalled it and reinstalled it but still nothing

Another possibility is that one of the ships/weapons you have modded is corrupted and is throwing the errors.
15/1/2014 - 16::42 - Unknown ship slot type:…\src\SIM_ShipHull.cpp 325
15/1/2014 - 16::52 - Unknown ship slot type:…\src\SIM_ShipHull.cpp 325

If we could try the uninstall again but once you have uninstalled the game please have a look at the install location and my games\gratuitousspacebattles and ensure that there are no files remaining.

Delete anything in those areas and try the reinstall again.

ok I’ve done that and checked that nothing is left now that I’ve reinstalled it I’ve checked that none of the mods I downloaded were there but the game still doesn’t work so it seems to be a problem with the vanilla races but there are no error messages

Hmm. That is weird for it to work then not work.
Try deleting the my games\gratuitousspacebattles directory entirely and run the game again.

Also check the pathing on your shortcut, the one you enabled the editor on

done all this and it still doesn’t work this is getting a bit annoying now

I know what you mean.

At this point in time I am at a loss as to being able to explain why the game would work before and not now.
A complete:

  • uninstall of the game
  • delete both directories \My Documents\My Games\GratuitousSpaceBattles and \Program Files (x86)\ Gratuitous Space Battles
  • delete shortcut
  • full install
    should bring the game back to square 1.

Is there any other system changes that could be affecting the game ?

it would not be unheard of for windows updates to screw over the non windows programs such as this game, however it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY but possible nonetheless
