(1) Windows 7 HP x64

(2) I had the problem with screen rez and settled on 1360x768 as a workable choice

(3) Shut down the machine with GSB running—now can’t get it running despite several wipes and reinstalls.

(4) Black screen hangs and is tricky to kill with taskman

When you say “wipes/reinstalls” did you delete/move the config & setting files?

I would delete\move the entire contents of My Documents/My Games/GSB, and try reinstalling again.

Now I only have the problem that it can’t handle 1920x1080, but it works well enough in 1360x768.

I’m not sure why you bothered to point that out, Archduke. I believe it was because Cliff answered a support email and I got it mixed up with this response. OK?

Now that that’s out of the way, let me remark that the problem isn’t actually resolved—I only thought it was, because the resolution problem appears to occur before the hanging problem.

Do you have any thoughts on the problem I’m having? Cliffski seems to think it’s a rival program, but it’s not likely, because it once ran fine as is. It’s the same environment every time I boot up. Something “broke” with the sudden shutdown. And it’s not a config file issue because those are all gone (except for the prefs file edited to avoid the fatal resolution).

I pointed it out because I originally began to wonder if the thread formerly included a now-deleted post, which would have created the apparrent discontinuity that I and everyone else on the forum was seeing. No harm, no foul. :slight_smile: Merry Christmas!

Ah, I see. No, nothing is missing.

Perhaps my delivery was cryptic. I’m getting several different error/debug messages on startup (when I have windows = 1) including Failed to initialise 3D engine and DeviceLost and even the “height too small” error even though the rez is 1024-1360x768. The game hangs, black on the main screen, while the music plays. Native resolution 1920x1080 fails but all others worked fine before I accidentally shut down the machine with GSB running a battle movie.

After that, NOTHING works. Clearing out the config files merely reset the rez to 1920x1080. Fixing that led to the current situation.

Any thoughts are welcome as Cliff has not responded since this morning when he suggested other programs might be competing for video resources but didn’t say what programs they might be. Firefox? Thunderbird? Avast? Very little else is running, and there have been no system changes since first installation yesterday.

While not incredibly likely to fix the problem, check to make sure your video card drivers at updated to the latest versions.
If it doesn’t fix this problem, atleast they are up to date. (rarely hurts).

All up to date, but thanks!

The big symptom here is that the game ran fine for a few hours before I shut down the machine in the middle of a game. So unless a driver rolled back on its own, all drivers are the way they were.
