I’m thinking about buying this game for my buddy for xmas. I have a PC, and he has a mac. I was wondering if we can play against each other with both versions, or if mac players and pc players are separate (can only play against people using the same version).

Yes. “Playing against” means using the challenge system, which is hosted online.
However, the guy with the Mac will be behind the PC guy in version number.

I do want to inform you that you can’t fight each other simultaneously. One can set up a challenge for the other one to beat though. Different version can fight each other.
