Mac Friendly Mods [Gratuitous Mod Pack for Mac! (pg. 5)]

Hi everyone,

I’ve took it upon myself to try and convert some of the mods into mac-friendly versions.

So far I’ve managed to download a program that let’s me convert the .dds files into .png files in one go. While I’ve figured out how to change all the .dds extensions in the .txt files to .png with textedit’s “edit/find/find” menus, it has to be done one file at a time.

I use the program Aorta, a .dds to .png batch converter, to change the format of the picture files and Mediafire to upload and host my files.

Anywho, I look forward to the responses.

Very cool energy-based mod. Love the negative pictures and the “energy” formed ships and pseudo-ships.

Mod Title: Homeworld 2: Hiigarans
Author: Lonestar
Download Link: http://www.mediafire.com/?veyv2vpr9jye0hl
Known Issues: The only thing I have discovered wrong is that there are no “Hard,” “Expert” deployments in the 1 scenario that features HW2 ships. Furthermore, within that scenario, the ship hulls are of the Federation, not Hiigarans.
Fixed Issues:

Other than the issue mentioned above, great mod. Ships have nice detail, a few extra modules. Love the plasma bombs. Next to the Beam Frigate, the bombers in HW2 were my next fav ships. I didn’t care for the big ships.

Download Link: http://www.mediafire.com/?e9wog2kjuoj92e2
Known Issues: Fighters work. For some reason, certain frigate weapons and cruiser weapons crash the game (I think). Not very playable IMHO. However, you are welcome to try and fix the bugs if you so choose to. It will allow you to fill hulls, but not play the game.
Fixed Issues:

For the most part this mod needs some coding adjustments I thinks.

Known Issues: I’ve noticed that some of the modules make the game display an error message. It doesn’t crash GSB but it does make it really annoying to play. I think it has something to do with the module coding.

Pleased to hear of your resolve with this civic-minded undertaking.

Doesn’t the game accept it regardless of the extension given in the text file (i.e. it only takes the actual name portion and then assumes whichever extension it wants to have)?

I dont think so. If u avoid an extension in a module file, for example, the module will not show that texture (a white square instead).

But u can change all the .dds extension in text files just doing a search/replace thing with any advanced editor.

Actually, I meant leave the dds extension there. I swear there was a discussion about the game automatically picking up pngs on Macs even if a dds was listed. Maybe I’m going crazy.

I haven’t tried it by leaving the dds extensions but it’s not that hard to change them. Textedit has a nifty function that will replace all instances of a word with another in an entire document. I’m just trying to figure how to automate the process by using script. No luck so far.

I’ve finished the Fantasy Fleet mod and it works great so far. It crashed once but it seemed to occur when a non-mod ship was about to explode (Alliance Cruiser).

Anyone know a good site where I can upload for free?

i use http://www.mediafire.com

I’ll strongly second the use of Mediafire. It’s rock-solid when compared to the sometimes-erratic nature of Megaupload, and is miles better than Rapidshare.

Even if mediafire is more stable than megaupload, megaupload in some cases is by far faster than mediafire. I cant use mediafire, it makes me to get crazy of the phathetic download speed. So, as u see, not always a web hosting is better than other even if it has more stability. For small size files, mediafire is maybe better option than megaupload, but for big files (im talking about 300mb + for example) it is not necessary better than megaupload (in my case of course not, on the contrary).

Time ago, i tried mediafire to upload one of my mods, and the upload speed made me to change to megaupload. I was uploading the mod at 16 kb/s. With megaupload 90 Kb/s.

Rapidshare is just a waste of time.

Ah ok. Mediafire sounds like the one to use. Thanks a bunch!

Hooray! Finally got it to work. Mediafire didn’t like my internet connection for the longest time. Dunno why. This mod is pretty fun, with many different ships from different sci-fi series.

Had time to do another one. I didn’t know hopefast made both of these large mods.

If anyone can give me the files for the Star Wars mod, that would be great. The upload is an .exe and my mac can’t read it.

From Dantalion comes this excellent mod. I’ve tested it out and it seems to work well! Loving the starfighters (especially the Republic Side)!

I haven’t tried it by leaving the dds extensions but it’s not that hard to change them. Textedit has a nifty function that will replace all instances of a word with another in an entire document. I’m just trying to figure how to automate the process by using script. No luck so far.

I use notepad++ to make searchs / replace on multiple documents at once, for example. Thats the way i make, for example a massive change in the modules folder replacing the restricted = “myrace” to restricted = “otherrace” (just an example).

But i assume that other advanced editors have the same functionallity.

About the dds extension, if the game “converts” the dds format to png on the fly, maybe yea the game just use the correct format on pc/mc but im not sure that the dds has the same inner format.

You’re thinking more complex than I intended :stuck_out_tongue: What I meant was that if you have “something.dds” in the text file, then on a PC the game will look for “something.dds”, but on a Mac it will look for “something.png” instead. Before it looks for the file it just swaps the listed extension to be the one it expects to find on that platform.

Still waiting for someone to answer this one (I don’t have a Mac to test on). I’m really sure there was a previous discussion.

I think Darkstar had this issue when he converted Uni-T to mac friendly. Leaving the code as .dds worked for some but for my mac all the ships were white pulsating boxes. When he edited the code it seemed to fix it.

is every single dds supposed to be converted to png? or just the ships?

As far as I know all of them. The turrets, modules, ships, etc. and their coding needs to be changed from .dds to .png.

ok, thanks.

you can expect a mac version of deserters 0.3beta later this week

sweet. I’ve been using graphicconverter (a mac program) to batch convert the .dds pictures to .png and textedit’s “find/replace” function to edit the coding. I wonder if notepad has a similar function?
